British Tamils protest in front of the Indian High Commission
Over two thousand British Tamils protested in front of the Indian High Commission in
London demanding India to stop the genocide of Tamils in Sri Lanka. In the protest,
which took place on Wednesday 18th February between 10am and 2pm, Tamils of all ages
from children to senior citizens took part.
The slogans of an enthusiastic protest, accompanied by placards carrying harrowing
pictures of the unfolding genocide in the Tamil homeland, attracted the attention of
passers by, many of whom stopped to listen sympathetically.
The protestors demanded India to stop its duplicitous collaboration and active support to
the Sri Lankan state in the genocide. The slogans shouted by the protestors included,
"India Stop the War in Sri Lanka"
"India Stop Military Aid to Sri Lanka"
"India Save Tamils From genocide"
"India why did you deceive Tamils?"
"India open your eyes"
"Send medicine to the Tamils"
"Tamils want peace"
"Tamils demand Tamil Eelam"
"Charge Rajapakse for War Crimes"
Journalists from BBC World Service, BBC Tamil Service and GTV recorded the event.
The Metropolitan Police provided friendly assistance to avoid inconvenience to the
public.
At the end of the peaceful protest, the attached memorandum was handed in to the Indian
High Commission. The event was jointly organised by the British Tamils Forum, the
Tamil Youth Organisation and the British Women’s Association who have stated that this
campaign will continue until India changes its barbaric stand against the legitimate
aspirations of the Tamil people for freedom with dignity.
