Thousands of people, largely Tamils and some British NGOs (Non-Governmental Organisation) participated in a demonstration outside the UK Parliament at the Parliament Square between 3.30pm and 6.30pm, today, Wednesday, 19 November 2008. The day was chosen as it is the Prime Minister’s Question (PMQ) day, Wednesday to have the attention of the maximum number of Members of Parliament.

Cross Party MPs Support for Tamils at the UK Parliament

Without exception all Members of Parliament from all three main political parties in a show of solidarity and concern spoke in support of Tamils and the general suffering of the Tamils, particularly in Vanni, North of Sri Lanka. They also showed no remorse in condemning the Government of Sri Lanka for its military action against the Tamil Nation to fundamentally a political problem and its persistent human rights violations.

Engaging the British Public to Free Tamil Eelam

As another step forward in the awareness campaign, this afternoon (11 October 2008) the British Tamils Forum hit the London Streets in many hundreds wearing ‘aprons’ printed with Tamil Eelam map and writing that stated Free Tamil Eelam on one side and Stop Genocide of Tamils in Sri Lanka on the other.
With blue skies and temperatures reaching over 25 degrees, Tamils were seen near most landmarks of London. British public and Tourists alike were curious to see so many wearing the same and walking peacefully handing out leaflets which clearly articulated the gruesome reality for Tamils in Sri Lanka.

Over six thousand Tamils gather outside UK Parliament to Demand Action against Indiscriminate Bombing of Tamils by Government of Sri Lanka

Over six thousand people, largely Tamils turned up with a relatively short notice outside the British Parliament yesterday evening (06 October 2008) between 4 pm and 7 pm to demand action against indiscriminate aerial bombardment of Tamils by Government of Sri Lanka (G0SL). They also demanded that the UK Government should act now rather than wait for diplomacy to work in helping the over 230,000 Tamils internally displaced by these bombings and military action taken by

In front of over 10,000 delegates, millions of viewers watching live on BBC television, at least three cabinet ministers namely, Foreign Secretary Rt. Hon David Miliband, Secretary of State for International Development Rt. Hon Douglas Alexander and the Defence Secretary Rt. Hon Des Browne behind him at the stage and with the Prime Minister listening to his speech behind the stage, Sen Kandiah, a senior member of the British Tamils Forum and the Leader of Tamils for Labour, delivered a damning speech condemning the current Government of Sri Lanka and the State for the oppression of Tamils for over 60 years.

a photo exhibition depicting ‘Sixty Years of Oppression of Tamils
in
Sri Lanka
’ was held in the British Houses of Parliament premises. The
exhibition was sponsored by the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG)
for Tamils. Hon Virendra Sharma MP who is also the Chairperson of
the APPG for Tamils said that he fully supports the Tamil struggle
both within the Parliament and outside. Hon Ms Joan Ryan MP who
officially opened the exhibition said that not enough has been done
by the international community to resolve this horrendous situation
in
Sri Lanka
for the Tamil community. In her final comment she said that"
this is a humanitarian crisis that needs a political solution and
the world must be alerted".

London next time – British Tamils Forum

British Tamils Forum joined forces with NSSP (Nava Sama Samaja Party) UK, TYO (Tamil Youth Organisation), S4P (Solidarity for Peace), Socialist Party, International Socialist Group and South Asia Solidarity Group and very effectively mobilised the masses in London to protest against the Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakshe. Mr. Rajapakshe is here in London for a Commonwealth Conference, where twelve other Heads of State are also
